Resume Check: Davidson Wildcats

Record: 4-6; 24-28 (10-14) in 2024
AP Ranking: N/A

Last Week: 2-1 series win over Lafayette Leopards in Davidson
Previous Meeting:
South Carolina beat Davidson 4-1 in a mid-week contest in Columbia during the 2024 season.

Davidson wasn’t great last season, and this year’s team is a bit of a wild card. The A-10 conference is up for grabs, though. The Wildcats believe they have a chance to win the conference crown.

Conference Player of the Year candidate Eli Putnam is off to a slow start so far, but the Wildcat offense has scored at least six runs in their last five games, nonetheless. Joining Putnam on the preseason all-conference squad was catcher Noah Jouras.

Though Putnam and Jouras have zero combined home runs this year, freshman standout Jamie Daly has led the way with eight extra-base hits and a 9-4 BB-K ratio. Middle infielder Jack Catrone has had a strong start to the year, as well.

On the mound, Davidson has gotten three good starts from Isaac Fix, but the senior lefty doesn’t generate a lot of swings and misses. Wilson Perkins does as the team’s usual Friday night arm; however, he has surrendered 24 hits in 16.1 innings pitched.

The South Carolina Gamecocks and Davidson Wildcats will play at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will not be on traditional television, but South Carolina baseball fans can stream the game on SEC Network+.

Resume Check: The Citadel Bulldogs

Record: 7-4; 21-32 (3-18) in 2024
AP Ranking: N/A
Last Week: 2-0 series sweep over Yale last weekend; 4-2 mid-week victory over Presbyterian on Tuesday
Previous Meeting: South Carolina beat The Citadel 7-1 in Columbia and 4-3 in Charleston during 2024 season.

Picked to finish second-to-last in the Southern Conference this preseason ahead of only VMI (who is off to a great start to the year), The Citadel is in the first year of new management as Russell Triplett made the move over from Newberry last summer.

Triplett took over a tough situation in Charleston. Only slick-fielding second baseman Travis Elliott (a Columbia-area native) made the preseason all-SoCon team. Still, though, there is optimism around Charleston that things will be better in 2025.

The Citadel offense hasn’t been very good. The Bulldogs have hit just two home runs, both by junior Matthew Lively. Because of that, when they get on base, they run a fair amount. Through 11 games, the Bulldogs have attempted 30 stolen bases. They also tend to take extra bases on balls in play.

Outside of a busted doubleheader against Miami (OH), The Citadel has pitched pretty well. More than half of their 46 runs allowed came in those two games. In their other nine contests, the Bulldogs have thrown the ball well, especially the team’s starters. Senior lefty Will Holmes has been great, surrendering just one run and seven hits through 17 innings. Ben Brash has given up just two runs (other than against the RedHawks), and George Derrick Floyd helped deliver a collective shutout against Yale this weekend.

The South Carolina Gamecocks and Citadel Bulldogs will play at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Joseph P. Riley Park in Charleston. The game will not be on television but will stream on ESPN+.
