South Carolina baseball is still undefeated after five games of the Paul Mainieri era. The 5-0 Gamecocks earned two mid-week victories on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, knocking off the Winthrop Eagles (on the road) and Queens Royals in the back-to-back contests.

Moving into the season’s second weekend, the Gamecocks will get another home series at Founders Park. This time, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers will be the opponent.

Resume Check: Milwaukee Panthers

Record: 1-2; 19-36 (13-17) in 2024
AP Ranking: N/A

Last Week: 1-2 series loss to Mercer last weekend in Macon
Previous Meeting: The South Carolina Gamecocks and Milwaukee Panthers have never played

UW-Milwaukee didn’t have a great year in 2024. However, the Panthers played a little better in-conference. Following a disastrous 6-19 mark in the non-con portion of the schedule, they went 13-17 once league play began. This spring, the media is higher on the team, voting them to finish fourth in the conference.

Milwaukee has played just three games so far this season, all coming in a weekend tilt at Mercer. The Panthers won the season opener 6-3 but dropped games two and three.

Right-handed pitcher Logan Schulfe earned preseason All-Horizon League honors but struggled in his first start against Mercer. He began his career at Milwaukee before transferring to Ball State for two seasons. Now, he is back with the Panthers and will partner with fellow righty Gavin Theis as the team’s top arms. Lefty transfer reliever Matthew Mueller earned a save against Mercer with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings.

First baseman Justin Hausser made the preseason All-Horizon League team and blasted a homer in the Panthers’ series against Mercer. Two-way player Camden Kuhnke (who plays on the infield and also pitched last season) is the only other Panther with a long ball this year; he smacked two over the wall against Mercer after logging zero home runs over the entire 2024 season.

Because of the weather up North, Milwaukee won’t play at home until March 21st when conference play begins. The Gamecocks might represent the stiffest test in a difficult run that also includes road series against Kansas and UNLV and mid-week contests against Purdue and Minnesota.

The Gamecocks and Panthers will begin their series at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s game two will start at 2:00 p.m. Sunday’s series finale’s first pitch is at 1:30 p.m. The series will not be on traditional television, but every game will stream on ESPN+. South Carolina baseball will start Dylan Eskew, Matthew Becker, and Jake McCoy on the bump again versus Milwaukee.
