Resume Check: Looking ahead to South Carolina baseball's next opponent, the Morehead State Eagles

Rivalry weekend left a bitter taste in the mouths of South Carolina baseball fans as the Clemson Tigers pulled a broom out to sweep their rivals from the Midlands. Thankfully, though, the Gamecock Faithful got a bit of a palate cleanser in the mid-week with victories over Davidson and The Citadel.
Now 11-3 on the season, USC will have one more weekend series in the non-conference slate before SEC play begins. This weekend, the Morehead State Eagles will travel to Columbia for a three-game set at Founders Park.

Resume Check: Morehead State Eagles
Record: 6-5; 37-24 (17-10) in 2024
D1Baseball Ranking: N/A
Most recent games: 2-1 series win over Qinipiac in Morehead; 9-8 mid-week loss to Louisville in Louisville
Previous Meeting: South Carolina beat Morehead State during 1994 season
The Morehead State Eagles are a solid baseball team. First-year head coach Chris Rose has taken over the program after several years as an assistant with the Eagles. So far during the 2025 season, they’ve done exactly what one should have expected. Morehead State has three series wins against lesser foes but lost to strong in-state mid-week opponents Kentucky and Louisville.
This preseason, the Ohio Valley Conference coaches picked the Eagles to finish fourth, but they also earned a first-place vote. Catcher Hunter Thomas, third baseman Griffin Olson, outfielder Hayden Robbins, outfielder Davis Germann, and reliever Will Grimmett all picked up some preseason all-conference recognition.
Thomas has stolen the show on offense. The senior already has seven long balls on the season and has reached base 24 times in 11 games.

On the mound, Kamden Hawks has been as exciting as he has been unpredictable. He has limited opponents to just two runs over 11.1 innings pitched, but he has given up 14 walks. Meanwhile, he leads the team’s starters in K/9 rate.
South Carolina baseball coach Paul Mainieri hasn’t revealed his starting rotation yet for the weekend. Dylan Eskew was the Gamecocks’ Friday night starter prior to an upper back tweak pushing him to Sunday against Clemson. Lefties Matthew Becker and Jake McCoy have been the other weekend starters. That trio shouldn’t change, but who starts when this weekend hasn’t come to light.
The South Carolina Gamecocks and Morehead State Eagles will begin their series on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s game two is slated for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch. Sunday’s finale will start at 1:30 p.m. All three games will be streamable on SEC Network+, but none will be on traditional television.
