Things aren’t going well for South Carolina baseball right now. With back-to-back sweeps against Arkansas and Tennessee and a mid-week loss to UNC, the Gamecocks have lost seven consecutive games.

USC has to get back on track in the mid-week on Tuesday to build some confidence before another tough SEC series (on the road against Mississippi State) next weekend. On Tuesday, Carolina will welcome the in-state Presbyterian Blue Hose to Founders Park.

Resume Check: Presbyterian Blue Hose

Record: 14-15 (6-3 in Big South)
D1Baseball Ranking: N/A
Last Week: Loss 9-1 to Clemson Tigers in Clemson in mid-week; 2-1 weekend series win over UNC-Asheville in Asheville

The Presbyterian Blue Hose haven’t had a great year overall. However, Elton Pollock’s group is a solid team that has played better lately. The turnaround has resulted in a 6-3 start to Big South conference play. They also knocked off a ranked Alabama Crimson Tide team in one of three games earlier this month.

This preseason, the Big South coaches picked PC to finish fourth in the league. The strong recent play then should come as no surprise. Presbyterian also put four players on the preseason All-Big South team. Infielder Trey Fenderson, catcher Jackson Hugus, designated hitter Jake Randolph, and relief pitcher Sean Hollister all earned the honor.

So far this season, Fenderson and Randolph have been really good table setters, each earning a batting average over .350. Utilityman Ryan Outz already has bested his 2024 home run total as he has belted seven balls over the fence. As a team, Outz’s seven long balls and Fenderson’s seven doubles are the only impressive power numbers. The Blue Hose hit a lot of singles, though, and recently that has been enough to put tallies in the win column.

On the mound, PC has struggled all year. Other than reliever Tyrell Williams (who has been great), no Blue Hose pitcher has had a strong start. Walks have been an issue as the team has surrendered 157 in 243.2 innings. Adding to that issue, the staff also has hit 40 opposing batters.

South Carolina baseball coach Paul Mainieri hasn’t revealed his plan for Tuesday’s pitching. Jarvis Evans has moved into a weekend role, leaving Jackson Soucie as the most-used mid-week starter this season. The Gamecock skipper did say that he didn’t plan to hold anything back against PC, however, as he knows his team is desperate to get off the schneid.

The South Carolina Gamecocks and Presbyterian Blue Hose will play at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night at Founders Park. SEC Network will televise the contest, while the ESPN app makes it available for streaming.
