On Monday, James Madison guard Bryce Lindsay announced that he plans to enter the transfer portal. If that name sounds familiar to South Carolina basketball fans, it’s because he was committed to the Gamecocks back in 2022. However, when USC fired Frank Martin, Lindsay re-opened his recruitment. He wound up with Buzz Williams and Texas A&M for a year before transferring to James Madison.

The move paid off for Lindsay. During his redshirt freshman year (and only season at JMU), the sharpshooter averaged 13.4 points per game. He also shot over 40% on nearly seven 3-point attempts per game. Primarily viewed as a catch-and-shoot player, the 6-3 guard has some more in the tank as a driver and can operate as a secondary creator in certain situations. Lindsay won the Sun Belt’s Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year honors this season. He also made the All-Sun Belt team.

Once in the portal officially, teams from all over the country will express interest in Lindsay. A previous connection to the Gamecocks could generate some reciprocal interest, but it is too early to know. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Lindsay’s 87 made 3-pointers would have been the third-highest total ever at South Carolina.

USC is expected to be very active in the transfer portal this spring. Lamont Paris’ team has multiple open scholarship spots, and more could become available. The Gamecocks’ improved NIL budget should give Paris and company a better starting point in this offseason’s portal recruiting efforts.
