Columbia, South Carolina native and former Gamecock basketball star GG Jackson hasn’t played this season for the Memphis Grizzlies. That seems set to change very soon.

Jackson, who injured his foot during the offseason, will practice with the Grizzlies’ G-League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle on Tuesday. According to a report from the organization, Jackson then will re-join the Grizzlies if practice goes well.

Though they have been without Jackson all season, and they have missed All-Star Ja Morant at times, the Memphis Grizzlies (24-13) are in third place in the NBA’s Western Conference. Memphis’ 123.1 points per game (best in the NBA) and +8.4 point differential (4th in the NBA) will only improve with Jackson’s return.

Last season, Jackson was a Rookie All-NBA selection despite spending the first third of the season in the G-League. Starting down the stretch for the Grizz, Jackson averaged 20.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and just under one steal per game. He showed himself to be a reliable offensive threat, both as an outside shooter and as a slasher. His athleticism allows him to offer something on the defensive end and on the boards, too.

Following an acclimation period, Jackson should settle into a key role in Memphis. He will see minutes at multiple positions and could be part of the starting lineup or come off the bench.

Jackson’s original injury return timeline had him returning to the floor sometime in mid-January. At this time, it is unclear how long the former South Carolina star will need before seeing game action. Over the next ten days, the Grizzlies have two games against the Houston Rockets, two against the San Antonio Spurs, and one against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
