Lamont Paris’ South Carolina basketball team begins their season in less than a week. On November 4th, the North Florida Ospreys will travel to Colonial Life Arena for the opener, and the 2024-2025 Gamecock season officially will be underway. In the days leading up to the first game, GamecockCentral will finish profiling each member of the team. Today we will look at guard Austin Herro.

Austin Herro (Redshirt Freshman, Shooting Guard6’3”, 180 pounds)

Last Season: did not play; redshirted true freshman season with South Carolina Gamecocks; graduated high school as unranked prospect in class of 2023; averaged 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists as a senior at Whitnall High School

Austin Herro walked on with the South Carolina basketball program ahead of the 2023-2024 season. Then, “Tyler’s younger brother” took a redshirt year and earned a scholarship this offseason.

Herro hasn’t played a game yet for the Gamecocks. He’s also dealt with a little bit of injury trouble this preseason. Even so, it shouldn’t be long before he makes his South Carolina debut. Though he isn’t expected to start the season with a prominent role, there’s something about the Wisconsin native’s game that is intriguing.

Herro brings an interesting skillset to the table for the Gamecocks. He is not particularly big (listed at 6’3″ and 180 pounds) or athletic. However, he showed an “it factor” in high school, especially on the offensive end of the floor. He’s confident and can make tough shots, so he’s got the potential to be an offensive spark plug for South Carolina if things go well for him. Herro also can handle the ball and pass well enough to operate as a secondary creator.

Defense isn’t the best part of his game, but Herro is a smart player and now that he is in his second year in Lamont Paris’ system, he could be ready to take a step up as a defender. Herro is a fiery player, too, something that Coach Paris can use to fuel his defensive efforts.

The Gamecocks have a lot of players who will fight for rotational minutes this season. Because of that, it is hard to predict how the back end of the roster will shake out for USC. A top group seems pretty clear, but Herro and others could push their way into the conversation. Herro and Morris Ugusuk will be fighting each other and several Gamecock wings for reserve roles on the perimeter.

Herro and the Gamecocks hope to follow up a record-tying 26-win season and 2nd-place SEC finish with another strong year. Another trip to the NCAA Tournament would mark South Carolina’s first back-to-back berths in the Big Dance since the 1990s.
