The transfer portal hasn’t opened officially for underclassmen, but South Carolina basketball is making news anyway. On Friday, former Iowa Hawkeyes guard Brock Harding is down to six schools in his portal recruitment. According to a report from On3’s Joe Tipton, the sophomore likes the South Carolina Gamecocks, TCU Horned Frogs, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Louisville Cardinals, Washington Huskies, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Despite being a rising junior, Harding is already in the transfer portal because Iowa players received a 30-day window for portal entry when the Hawkeyes fired head coach Fran McCaffery last weekend.

During two seasons in Iowa City, Harding developed into one of the best facilitators in the BIG Ten. He earned the starting point guard gig as a sophomore but came off the bench some toward the season’s end. For the 2024-2025 campaign, Harding averaged 8.8 points and 5.3 assists per game. He also chipped in 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 39.8% from 3-point land. Harding logged a 20-point, 10-assist game this season, one of two points-and-assists double-doubles to his credit.

As things stand, the 6-foot guard ranks No. 31 overall in On3’s transfer portal player rankings. He also is the country’s No. 7 transfer point guard.

South Carolina has a large point guard-shaped hole on the roster. The Gamecocks didn’t have a primary facilitator this year as combo guards Jamarii Thomas, Jacobi Wright, and Morris Ugusuk had to play somewhat out of position. Incoming freshman guard Eli Ellis is an improving distributor, but to help maximize his scoring potential, he could use a veteran point guard playing next to him.
