Sharpshooting transfer portal guard hears from South Carolina

On Tuesday, Transfer Portal Report published a report that said South Carolina had checked in with transfer guard Rodney Brown, Jr. Brown, who played for one season each for both the Cal Golden Bears and Virginia Tech Hokies, is a 6-6 guard known for his shooting ability.
Brown averaged 3.5 points as a freshman at Cal and 4.1 points as a sophomore with VT. He combined, though, to shoot over 40% on his 3-point attempts.
So far in his college career, Brown hasn’t brought much else to the table other than outside shooting (though he has a little bit of juice as a passer), and he has played a limited role at each of his stops because of it. However, a lengthy wing with shooting touch provides intrigue, nonetheless.

If Brown or a player like him winds up with the Gamecocks, they wouldn’t be expected to be a starter. However, with Myles Stute’s status in limbo as he appeals to the NCAA for another year of eligibility, wing shooting likely will continue to be on Lamont Paris’ radar. In fact, even if Stute can return to USC, the Gamecocks could use another shooter or two.
Carolina is in the mix for at least one other elite shooter in the transfer portal and has several irons in the fire in their search for portal guards. The Gamecocks also will be in the market for a true center. No player taller than 6’8″ is on the current roster.
