South Carolina basketball began its 2024-2025 season last week. Below is a quick overview of that first week and a look ahead to week two.

South Carolina Gamecocks lose season opener to North Florida Ospreys

In disappointing fashion, the Gamecocks started 0-1 for the first time during Lamont Paris’ tenure. Carolina allowed ten made 3-pointers and got out-rebounded 43-37. USC also lost the turnover battle and gave up 15 direct points off of those giveaways.

Free throw shooting also was poor (56%), another bad mark in a game marred by misplaced fundamentals.

After the game, Coach Paris called out his players’ effort.

Result: South Carolina lost 74-71.

South Carolina Gamecocks bounce back with win over South Carolina State Bulldogs

After a few days of reflection (and, no doubt, tough practices), the Gamecocks played again. In a much better overall performance, USC got up by 16 by halftime and cruised to victory. Carolina lost the turnover battle again but played much better perimeter defense, allowing just three 3s.

Paris switched up the starting lineup ahead of this game. Instead of Thomas-Davis-Stute-CMB-Pringle, he opted to play Jacobi Wright at the shooting guard spot in place of Zach Davis. Wright had a good showing, and Davis still played more minutes than both Wright and Stute.
