South Carolina basketball picks up shot-making big man from transfer portal

South Carolina basketball has picked up another transfer portal commitment. On Sunday, former Boston College power forward Elijah Strong pledged his services to the Gamecocks.
On3 views Strong as a 4-star transfer portal prospect and the No. 101 overall player in this year’s portal cycle.
The Charlotte native is the fifth commitment in USC’s transfer portal class this offseason and the second post player, joining combo guard Meechie Johnson, scoring wing Treysen Eaglestaff, guard Kobe Knox, and center Christ Essandoko. Strong, like Essandoko, will have two years of eligibility to play with the Gamecocks.

The 6-8, 235-pound forward averaged 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds for BC this season. He also shot 45.2% from the field and 36.2% on 3-pointers. He logged a pair of double-doubles as a sophomore, including a 25-point, 13-rebound outburst against Temple.

A 3-star prospect out of high school, Strong played for one of the best teams in the country at Myers Park High School.
Strong made 25 3-point shots this season. While not an eye-popping number, that is more than all of South Carolina’s big men combined. His skill set seems to favor a style much like former Gamecock BJ Mack’s. Mack scored in the pick-and-pop game and on the low block for USC’s record-tying 2023-2024 team. Strong also has an intriguing low-post game and likely will be used in a similar way to Mack on offense.
Strong joins a South Carolina roster with just three returners (Collin Murray-Boyles, Jordan Butler, and Myles Stute) and four incoming freshmen (Eli Ellis, Grant Polk, EJ Walker, and Hayden Assemian). Barring a Murray-Boyles NBA Draft declaration or additional transfer portal movement, the Gamecocks now have three available scholarships.
