South Carolina basketball lost a productive player in last year’s transfer cycle as All-SEC guard Meechie Johnson left the program to return to Ohio State. However, Johnson battled some mental health issues this season and left the Buckeyes. Now, per a report from On3’s Joe Tipton, the former Gamecock has made the expected move to transfer again.

Johnson played beneath the required threshold of games to apply for a mental health medical redshirt this season. If granted another year by the NCAA, he will play his sixth season of college basketball.

Ever since Johnson took his leave of absence from Ohio State, Carolina fans have clamored for him to return to Columbia. It’s easy to see why. In his final season with the Gamecocks, he averaged 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. He became a solid defender in Lamont Paris’ system, too.

Johnson could be a transfer fit for USC this cycle. Assuming he is able to work through the issues that plagued him at OSU, Johnson will bring athleticism, defensive effort, secondary playmaking, and (not always efficient) shot-making to his next stop. He can play either guard spot but is most effective as an off-ball guard who helps out at the point guard position rather than a starting point guard.

While his offensive production can fluctuate, he is the type of player who can get red-hot. He logged five 25-point efforts as a Gamecock, most famously a 26-point outburst to down the Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena.
