On Friday, On3 learned that Columbia, South Carolina native Robert McCray has entered the transfer portal. A rising redshirt senior, McCray spent the last two years at Jacksonville. As a guard who can handle either backcourt spot, he plays a position of need for his hometown team.

Following a transfer from Wake Forest, McCray was an all-Atlantic Sun performer in both of his years in Jacksonville. The 6-4 athletic guard had to do a lot for the Dolphins (hindering his efficiency a bit), but he is a high-level player sure to draw heavy interest from teams who need guard help out of the portal.

The son of a coach (his father Robert is the head coach at CA Johnson High School in Columbia), the younger McCray knows how to get a bucket. He combines his athleticism with some savvy with the ball in his hands, making getting to the basket look easy. He also can take and make difficult shots from outside. Many of his 3-point attempts came from way beyond the arc or off dribble pull-ups. Putting those skills together, McCray averaged 16.2 points per game this season.

McCray is a combo guard, but when called upon to run the offense, he can hold his own. He averaged 4.5 assists as he was asked to play more point guard this year than last. The former AC Flora star is a capable defender and rebounder, as well.

With McCray just entering the transfer ranks today, no news has surfaced regarding conversations with the Gamecocks. However, he would fill a need and is a local kid, so some form of contact would make sense. USC is involved with several portal guards already, but McCray could join the fray soon.
