Former South Carolina wing finds new home via transfer portal

Former South Carolina wing Zach Davis has found his landing spot. After three years with the Gamecocks, the 6-7 Palmetto State native will suit up for his senior season with the Memphis Tigers. On3’s Joe Tipton reported the news on Thursday afternoon following Davis’ visit last weekend.
Davis originally committed to USC when the program was led by Frank Martin. Then, he stuck around and had an increasingly big role each year he was on campus. As a freshman, he was a reserve. As a sophomore, he took over starting duties mid-way through the season en route to a program record-tying 26 wins. Finally, as a junior this year, he again started on the bench before becoming a full-time starter for the Gamecocks. However, his minutes were much higher, and so was his responsibility level on offense. Davis was one of the better perimeter defenders on the team the past two seasons.
Davis will join a Memphis squad coached by former NBA great Penny Hardaway. Hardaway is entering year eight with the Tigers.

Davis was one of eight players from last year’s USC team who have entered the portal, joining guards Austin Herro, Arden Conyers, Jamarii Thomas, Cam Scott, and Morris Ugusuk and post players Nick Pringle and Okku Federiko. Conyers and Pringle are the only other ones to find new homes so far.

The Gamecocks also have brought in four transfer commitments in guards Meechie Johnson and Kobe Knox and big men Christ Essandoko and Elijah Strong. Big-time transfer wing Treysen Eaglestaff decommitted on Wednesday.
Carolina still has room on its roster for further transfer additions. With two returners, four transfers, and a four-man incoming freshman class, Lamont Paris has five available scholarships to give. Any additional transfer portal movement or a Collin Murray-Boyles NBA Draft reversal will change that number.
