Marcus Satterfield responds to criticism from Josh Vann’s podcast
By Andrew Graham, On3.com
Things could’ve gone any number of ways between South Carolina wide receiver Josh Vann and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield this week. On a recent episode of his podcast with fellow Gamecock Darius Rush — “Completely Cocky” — Vann shared an anecdote where Satterfield’s play calling decision put some players in a bind.
Essentially, on a third down in Week 2 against Arkansas, Satterfield called a base play that hadn’t been repped in weeks by the offense. They technically knew the call, but in the moment it amounted to a curveball from their own sideline. Vann expressed some frustration about this on the podcast, but had gone to apologize to Satterfield when things started to blow up. For what it’s worth, both Satterfield and Vann seem ready to let bygones be bygones.
“Oh yeah. He came up here last night and was like, ‘I need to apologize to you.’ I thought he was talking about a route. I was like, ‘You’re good man, you’re good.’ And then he left. And then someone had sent me the text. And I texted him and I was like, ‘Oh that’s what you’re going to apologize about. I wish I’d have known that then,'” Satterfield said in a joking manner. “That happens.”

The South Carolina offensive coordinator also added a little more context to what happened in that moment. The call itself came from the Gamecocks base package of plays, meaning it’ll be on the call sheet week-in, week-out. But base plays also get installed early in camp before getting shelved for situational work and more specifics as camp gets going and the focus shifts to a particular opponent.
By mid-season, the calls will be familiar for all. But on Week 2, on the road, even a play the Gamecocks plan to lean on felt like a foreign task.
“We have a series of plays in a certain formation that’s just kind of a base play for us, they gave us the exact look that we wanted, that we needed in order for that play to be successful. And I called it and you know, we hadn’t repped it in about three weeks so I shouldn’t have done it,” Satterfield said. “But, I can’t promise you I won’t do it again. I’ll try not to, but we have base plays that we have to be able to carry over from week to week.”
