Shane Beamer raves about the response from community after Tennessee win
By Chandler Vessels of On3.com
It was been a week of celebration for South Carolina fans after their victory against Tennessee, and coach Shane Beamer is all for it. After the Gamecocks offense came out of nowhere to hang 63 points on the Vols and end their College Football Playoff hopes, Columbia has been buzzing ahead of this week’s rivalry game with Clemson.
In his Monday press conference, Beamer admitted he has been too busy preparing for that game to truly get out and enjoy the community, but shared how he has still received plenty of love from fans.
“The response has been fantastic,” Beamer said. “I’m not out in the community unfortunately during the season. …So, I wish I’d been out in the community, but my wife told me she got a standing ovation yesterday at Pilates. I thought that was pretty cool that they recognized her when she came in. My kids certainly had a great day at school on Monday, better than what they had probably last Monday. So, it’s been fantastic. You’re happy for the people on the outside.
“Then just for me, I know how important Saturday night was to so many people, without a doubt. They deserve it, that celebration. It’s been pretty cool. It took me two days to get through all the text messages that I had from people congratulating me. Especially the ones that were lifelong Gamecock fans that talked about how much Saturday night meant to them for so many reasons. That was pretty cool and rewarding, but it’s also one of those where you’ve got to put the phone down and get to work on Clemson. It’s week-to-week in this profession. Last Saturday was really good, but this Saturday is a new week also.”
As much as the fans are enjoying the win against Tennessee right now, though, Shane Beamer knows how quickly that can change. As he prepares to take on Clemson this week, he thought back to last year’s loss in the rivalry game and what he noticed on a recruiting trip the next Monday.

It was a reminder of just what this game means to the fans, win or lose.
“We immediately went on on the road recruiting, so we lost that game Saturday last year and on Monday I was in some high schools in Charleston, South Carolina,” he said. “Certainly the people that work in the front office that wear orange were excited to see me, but for the wrong reasons for me. They were certainly very excited about that.
“My point being, you go into high schools and there’s a bunch of Carolina people in there and a bunch of Clemson people in there. You realize when you go into that high school that you’ve got a lot of people who are sky high after Saturday and a lot of people that aren’t sky high. It opens up your eyes to how impactful this game is to so many people and what it means. So that really resonated with me. When you go to the Gamecock Club events in the spring time and summer time, you are reminded how important this game is to so many people also.”
Like it did with Tennessee last week, South Carolina has a chance to spoil Clemson’s chances at a College Football Playoff with a win this weekend. However, the Gamecocks have not beaten the Tigers since 2013, carrying a seven-game losing streak into the matchup.
If they can somehow manage to pull off another victory, though, Beamer is aware of just how special it will be for the fans. The Gamecocks and Tigers will kick off at noon ET on Saturday in Clemson.
