South Carolina crushed by Gators in 19-run loss after delayed Game 2 restarts

It’s been a hindrance for South Carolina all season long. More times than not, when the situation has asked for the offense to come through in a big spot, it just hasn’t happened.
The Gamecocks had their chances to score in some opportune moments in the late going on Friday, but failed to do so. It was much of the same on Sunday as the team resumed the middle game of a series with Florida after a nearly 24-hour weather delay.
There was no bigger spot than when the Gamecocks strung together three straight singles and had two runners on with no outs to begin the seventh inning. It was a near identical situation to one from Friday’s 9-5 loss in the series opener. In both games, South Carolina had multiple runners on base with no outs, trailed by three runs in the seventh, and faced Gators right-hander Jake Clemente on the other side.
Just like two nights earlier, nothing came of it. It ultimately didn’t make much of a difference as the Gamecocks, who were down by three runs at the time, went on to lose in a blowout 22-3 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader at Founders Park.

As much as timely hitting has been an issue for South Carolina (26-22, 5-18 SEC) this season, so has finding consistency from its pitching staff. When the game restarted, Dylan Eskew gave up three quick runs in his first inning of work to put the team in an early hole in the fourth.

The right-hander surrendered four runs in two innings as he gave up a long solo shot to Luke Heyman, who clubbed two homers in the Gators’ win and three so far this weekend.
Florida pounced on the bullpen for the rest of the afternoon, scoring 21 of its runs after the game picked back up. The Gamecocks walked 13 batters on the day, 10 of which came in the final two innings, helping the Gators score 16 of their runs in that time.
The only source of offense for South Carolina came from KJ Scobey, who hit a solo homer in the sixth. Jordan Carrion was responsible for bringing home the Gamecocks’ other two runs.
Up next: South Carolina will look to avoid being swept by the Gators when the two teams play the third game of the series at 5:20 p.m. The seven-inning game will be on SEC Network Plus.
