Former South Carolina defensive back making coaching move
On Sunday, HuskersOnline’s Sean Callahan reported that former South Carolina defensive back Addison Williams is making a move in the coaching industry.
After spending the 2024 season as the associate head coach/co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach at UCF (his third year with the program), Williams will be a Nebraska Cornhusker. According to Callahan, Nebraska “is close” to making the hire official. Nebraska will be Coach Williams’ first time coaching outside of the southeast.

Williams, who also has spent time coaching at Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Furman, Tusculum, and his alma mater, is viewed as one of the country’s up-and-coming young defensive backs coaches. He has spent four years of his career working under Gus Malzahn, including the previous three seasons at UCF. Malzahn, though, left UCF this offseason to become Florida State’s offensive coordinator.
Williams is one of several coaches who will replace the outgoing Tony White for the ‘Huskers. White was the team’s defensive coordinator, associate head coach, and defensive backs coach. Williams will handle the defensive backs coaching duties in Lincoln. John Butler will be the team’s new defensive coordinator.

During his South Carolina football career, Addison Williams played for Steve Spurrier from 2007-2009. He made the Academic All-SEC team three times before an injury ended his playing career and began his coaching one. Williams spent three years coaching with the Gamecocks from 2010-2012, all in off-field roles. With Carolina, he played alongside and/or coached all-time great USC defensive backs like Stephon Gilmore, DJ Swearinger, Antonio Allen, Emanuel Cook, Darian Stewart, Captain Munnerlyn, Victor Hampton, Devonte Holloman, and Chris Culliver.
Williams is the second former Gamecock defender to make coaching news in recent days. Earlier this week, former South Carolina linebacker/EDGE Bryson Allen-Williams became interim linebackers coach at Southern Cal and could be a real candidate to take the full-time job this offseason.
