Chambers High School in Charlotte, North Carolina has announced South Carolina football alum Captain Munnerlyn as its next head coach. The school introduced Munnerlyn on Friday afternoon. He replaces former head coach Brandon Wiggins who resigned following the 2024 season.

Munnerlyn spent the past two seasons at Myers Park High School (also in Charlotte) as an assistant coach. He worked with defensive backs at Myers Park. Prior to joining the staff at Myers Park, Munnerlyn dipped his toes in the coaching waters in different ways. He worked as a trainer in Charlotte, the city where he spent most of his NFL career, and even spent time as a volunteer assistant at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama (his alma mater) during the 2011 NFL lockout.

Before getting into coaching, Munnerlyn spent 11 years in the NFL. After being selected in the 7th round of the 2009 NFL Draft, he played with the Carolina Panthers for five seasons, the Minnesota Vikings for three, and then the Carolina Panthers again for two more. He spent part of the 2019 campaign with the Buffalo Bills before retiring. At the time of his retirement, he owned the all-time Panthers record for interception returns for touchdowns (5). He also won the Korey Stringer Good Guy Award in 2015 when he was with the Vikings.

During his South Carolina football career, Munnerlyn was an All-SEC performer. As part of Steve Spurrier’s first full recruiting class with the Gamecocks, the small defensive back played much bigger than his 5’9″ frame. He was a willing tackler despite his size, and he was excellent in coverage. Operating both in the slot and out wide, Munnerlyn totaled five interceptions as a Gamecock and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
