Shane Beamer: June 'should be a great month for us'
This time last year Shane Beamer and the entire South Carolina football program was preparing for in-person recruiting to restart for the first time in over a year.
Not only did June 1, 2021 mark the restart of the traditional recruiting process for all of college football after a nearly 15-month COVID-forced shutdown. But it was also the first time that Beamer and his staff would be able to host prospects on the South Carolina campus since landing the job the December before.
As June 2022 quickly approaches next week, it should be another pivotal month for the future of Beamer’s program as he and his staff host 10 high school camp days, countless unofficial visitors and at least two big official visit weekends.
“We were just talking about it as a staff (Monday) in our staff meeting that, obviously, last June was crazy because it was the first time the recruits had been on campus in over a year, the first time that they had met us face-to-face,” Beamer said Tuesday in Florence. “Now, it probably won’t be as crazy but I still told our staff, I want it to have the same excitement, the same energy, the same newness, the busy-ness then as what we had last year. We need to have it this year as well. So it will be really big for us.”
Last year, the Gamecocks hosted prospects on campus nearly every day of June.
This year might not be quite as hectic considering prospects in the 2022 class were trying to cram a year’s worth of recruiting into a few months. But it will be equally important.

The one-day camps kick off next Saturday, June 4, and the Gamecocks will also host four 7-on-7 tournament days this year.
The weekends of June 10 and June 24 have already been identified as major weekends in terms of hosting official visitors.
“Recruiting-wise, it should be a great month for us and hopefully there will be some great things happening this month,” Beamer said. “June was really good to us last year in recruiting. By the end of the month, we were on a hot streak where it seemed like somebody was calling to commit every day. And hopefully we have the same success this year. I think we’re in great positions with some people who will be here on some unofficial visits. I know we’re in great positions with some guys that will be here on official visits. It will be a really, really critical month from a recruiting standpoint and football standpoint.”
This June’s success could get an early start this weekend when the Gamecocks could close out the month with some positive news as South Carolina is a finalist for Atlanta (Ga.) Pace class of 2023 On3 four-star OL Trovon Baugh who plans to announce his decision on Saturday.
