On Thursday, Gamecock signee Cutter Woods was named the MaxPreps South Carolina High School Football Player of the Year.
Woods, who also won the award last year, passed for nearly 3500 yards and 43 touchdowns as a senior at Westside High School in Anderson. He added four rushing touchdowns and close to 300 yards on the ground, as well.

His most recent (and final) high school performance came over the weekend. Woods and Westside fell to fellow incoming South Carolina freshman Jayden Sellers and South Florence in a class state championship matchup. With a 42-41 final score, it was a back-and-forth affair that included several big-time throws from Woods. The loss ended Westside’s bid for consecutive titles.
Earlier this month, Woods signed with the South Carolina football program. On3’s industry rankings view him as the No. 722 player in the country, No. 18 in South Carolina, and No. 45 among all quarterbacks in the class of 2025. He was the only quarterback signee in the Gamecocks’ 2025 recruiting class.

LaNorris Sellers is the clear-cut starter for the Gamecocks in 2025. However, the redshirt sophomore is NFL Draft-eligible after next season, so bringing in a talented quarterback like Woods was important. Woods joins redshirt freshman Dante Reno and veteran quarterback/receiver Luke Doty as Sellers’ backups. Current scholarship QBs Robby Ashford (transfer portal) and Davis Beville (graduation) will have moved on by next fall.

This week, USC head coach Shane Beamer shared that Woods was among the signees who have already enrolled. This means that Woods is on campus and going through practice in a limited capacity this winter. Joining him in bowl practice are the Gamecocks’ five wide receiver signees, Jayden Sellers, Malik Clark, Jordon Gidron, Brian Rowe, and Lex Cyrus.
