Former South Carolina football star traded to new NFC contender

On Saturday evening, former South Carolina football star Deebo Samuel was traded. Following six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Samuel will spend at least the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news.
Samuel was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler back in 2021. However, minor injuries have kept him from playing a full season since then, limiting his statistical output. Even so, Samuel is the NFL’s all-time leader in wide receiver rushing touchdowns. He has found the end zone 20 times on the ground during his career. For his career as a pro, Samuel has logged nearly 6000 yards from scrimmage and 42 total scores.

Making the move from the West Coast to the East Coast will see Samuel shift from a perennial NFC contender (though one that had a poor showing in 2024) to an up-and-comer in the conference. With second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm and fellow star wide receiver Terry McLaurin entrenched on the other side, Samuel will not have to handle full WR1 duties with the Commanders. Instead, his versatility remains a factor with a team that doesn’t need him to be the top threat through the air at all times.

Barring an extension with Washington, Samuel will become a free agent following the 2025 season. The 49ers gave Samuel the opportunity to seek a trade this offseason.
During his South Carolina football career, Samuel was a great receiver and an even better returner. He finished his time in garnet and black with over 2200 yards of offense, 148 receptions, and 23 touchdowns on offense. He also logged four kickoff returns for touchdowns, a number that is still a Gamecocks record.
