Where PFF ranks South Carolina's Dylan Stewart among returning EDGE players

The South Carolina football program boasts two of the most-hyped sophomores in the country as redshirt sophomore LaNorris Sellers and true sophomore Dylan Stewart have dominated headlines this offseason. On Friday, Pro Football Focus (PFF) revealed their list of the top overall returning EDGE players in college football. It should come as a surprise to no one that Stewart featured prominently on the list.

Per PFF’s Max Chadwick:
“Stewart is the freakiest athlete the Gamecocks have had at edge defender since Jadeveon Clowney was launching helmets over a decade ago. And like Clowney, he has the upside of becoming a No. 1 overall pick if he keeps up this trajectory.
“The former five-star recruit earned a 91.4 pass-rush grade as just a true freshman, tied for sixth among all edges in America. His 51 pressures were tied for second among returning Power Four edge rushers, as well. Stewart needs to get a bit stronger to set the edge better in the run game, but he’s already the most fearsome pass-rusher in college football thanks to his physical gifts.”

During his breakout freshman campaign, Stewart logged 6.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. He and Nagurski Trophy winner Kyle Kennard became one of the country’s top pass rush duos. With Kennard now off to the NFL, Stewart will have new partners for the 2025 season.
If Stewart takes a step forward this fall, it could mean something special for South Carolina’s College Football Playoff chances. The Gamecocks relied on a strong defense in 2024 as they were one of the first teams left out of the new 12-team postseason tournament. Stewart projects to be the most impactful player on the 2025 edition of the USC defense.
