South Carolina football earns AP top 25 spot in final poll
With the College Football Playoff National Championship now decided, the 2024 college football season is over. With that, the Associated Press released its last national rankings on Tuesday. South Carolina football earned a spot in the final poll.
Slotting in at No. 19, Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks finished ranked in the final AP poll for the first time since 2022 (No. 23). In fact, South Carolina’s spot at No. 19 is the team’s highest postseason ranking since 2013. Following that season, the Gamecocks finished 4th.
Following the Gamecocks’ rivalry win over the Clemson Tigers, South Carolina was 9-3. That mark put the Gamecocks right into the thick of the College Football Playoff discussion.

Because the team started 3-3 this fall, it took time for South Carolina to earn an AP ranking in 2024. However, the Gamecocks rattled off six consecutive wins to finish the regular season. By the time the regular season ended, USC ranked 13th. Conference championship week saw Carolina drop to No. 14, but a Citrus Bowl loss to Illinois pushed the Gamecocks down to their final spot in the ranking.
With a strong finish and some exciting young talent on the roster, South Carolina is a trendy pick to take a step forward in 2025. Next summer’s AP preseason poll likely will be kind to the Gamecocks.
