South Carolina football fans (and fans from the entire country) are working to adjust to an ever-changing college athletics landscape. The age of the transfer portal, NIL, laxer redshirt rules, giant television/streaming contracts, and conference realignment has brought money to the forefront of college sports in a whole new way.

On3 has been a bit ahead of the curve in analyzing players’ NIL valuations. Combining data points from a player’s performance, influence, exposure, and known NIL deals, the outlet’s algorithm creates the On3 NIL Valuation. Essentially, the valuation determines which players are worth (monetarily) the most to their teams and themselves through NIL.

Two South Carolina freshmen have cracked the On3 top-100 list for college football. EDGE player Dylan Stewart slots in at no. 84, and offensive lineman Josiah Thompson is ranked no. 87. Stewart’s NIL valuation currently sits at $637,000. Thompson’s is $616,000. The first-year duo also ranks as the country’s 7th and 8th true freshmen in On3’s NIL valuation.

Both Stewart and Thompson are starters for the Gamecocks on their respective sides of the ball.

Stewart began the year as a reserve but forced his way onto the field with impact plays. Even with several plays wiped out by penalties, the Washington DC native has logged 3.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles, and his impact has gone much deeper than the box score. No. 6 is a game-wrecker and has NFL Draft analysts calling him a future 1st round pick.

Josiah Thompson has been South Carolina’s starting left tackle all season. The Palmetto State product has had inconsistencies but, he has shown enough upside to have fans excited for his future. With at least two more years before the NFL comes calling, Thompson has plenty of time to continue developing his elite physical tools.

Both youngsters made On3’s Preseason True Freshman All-American squad.
