South Carolina injury update after Georgia State win

By Collyn Taylor

South Carolina escaped its season-opener with Georgia State relatively injury-free, although there is one lingering injury out there to be determined.

RJ Roderick is dealing with an arm injury and the Gamecocks are going to “evaluate as we go,” Shane Beamer said.

Roderick left the game on the Gamecocks’ first drive of the day and didn’t return.

In his stead, South Carolina rode Nick Emmanwori, who played well. Emmanwori finished with three tackles and a pass breakup that led to the first blocked punt of the night.

The Gamecocks did have a few guys go down with other ailments, most specifically with Jakai Moore, Jaylen Nichols and Darius Rush. All three could have been back in the game if needed.

Beamer also said Dakereon Joyner is dealing with a calf injury and was going to try and play but the staff opted not to play him.

The Gamecocks were also without Christian Beal-Smith and Corey Rucker.

Beal-Smith has been limited in camp with a foot injury. If he does play, he will have a chance to fit heavily into the Gamecocks’ running backs rotation.

He’s listed currently as the backup running back behind MarShawn Lloyd alongside Juju McDowell.

Beal-Smith is in his first season with the program, transferring after a quality career at Wake Forest.

Corey Rucker has been injured for a good portion of preseason camp and did not play against Georgia State.

He’s coming off his best season yet with career highs in catches (59), yards (826) and touchdowns (9).

Rucker, if healthy, would be in the receiver rotation and is listed as the backup behind Ahmarean Brown and Dakereon Joyner in the slot.

When he committed, Rucker was tabbed as an immediate impact guy after a good couple seasons at Arkansas State. In two seasons there he caught 75 passes for 1,279 yards and 14 touchdowns.
