South Carolina EDGE Gilber Edmond earns NFL opportunity

South Carolina EDGE Gilber Edmond will get a chance to impress NFL coaches this summer. According to his agency, Forever Athlete Management, Edmond has earned a training camp invitation from the Los Angeles Chargers. On Saturday, the Chargers drafted fellow USC EDGE Kyle Kennard and signed running back Rocket Sanders to an undrafted free agent contract.
With the Chargers, Edmond (and Kennard) will look to help bolster the team’s pass rush. Los Angeles is looking to replace All-Pro defensive end Joey Bosa, who signed with the Buffalo Bills in free agency.

Edmond had a unique journey in garnet and black. After signing with the Gamecocks as a late addition to the class of 2020, Edmond began his career as a linebacker. Then, he moved to EDGE and played a rotational role in 2021. In 2022, he became a starter after filling in for the injured Jordan Strachan. Following the 2022 season, he left the program via the transfer portal and spent 2023 at Florida State. However, Edmond traded in his garnet and gold to return to the garnet and black for his final year of eligibility in 2024.
During his time with the Gamecocks, Edmond logged 54 overall tackles, three sacks, and 11.5 tackles for loss. He also earned a spot on the SEC’s First-Year Academic Honor Roll back in the 2020-2021 school year.
