South Carolina injury report: Skill players miss scrimmage
As the South Carolina football team worked through its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, it did so without some of its top skill players, though none of the injuries are considered overly serious for the long term.
Head coach Shane Beamer said Tuesday that wide receivers Dakereon Joyner and E.J. Jenkins and running back Juju McDowell all missed the scrimmage while receiver Xavier Legette “scrimmaged but probably wasn’t 100 percent.”
Beamer is hopeful that some on that list will be able to practice more at some point this week.
“I would say of those ones I just named,” Beamer said, referring to Joyner, Legette, McDowell and Jenkins, “a lot of them would be (available for Saturday’s scrimmage). As we go into it, nobody is one that we just sit here and say that they’re out for the rest of the spring. We’re hopeful that they’ll continue to be able to come back a little bit. We’ve got some defensive backs that are banged up. Tyrese Ross, he hasn’t been able to do much. Darius Rush, he’s got a little bit of a groin that he’s battling. So we’ve got a lot of receivers and DBs that we’re missing right now. But we’re really pushing hard and they’re pushing hard as players to get back out there.”
Beamer added that tight end/”wide back” Jaheim Bell remains sidelined with a hamstring injury that he suffered during the first practice of the spring.
“I hope,” Beamer said when asked if Bell would be able to participate again at some point this spring. “I know about two weeks ago one of y’all or somebody asked me, if he was out for the rest of the spring, because that was the word, and I didn’t think he was. I don’t think he’s going to be one that will practice this week. He tells me that he’s working hard and continuing to get better and things like that, but we certainly need to get that hamstring under control for him. He’s doing a nice job of doing what he can but he’s not full speed right now, which is disappointing.”

Beamer did say that quarterback Luke Doty, with whom the staff has been cautious as he returns from last season’s foot injury, was able to participate in Saturday’s scrimmage.
The Gamecocks completed their 10th practice of the spring on Tuesday morning and will return to action for another practice on Thursday before scrimmaging again on Saturday morning.
