Former South Carolina offensive coordinator gets new OC gig
Former South Carolina football offensive coordinator Kurt Roper was dismissed by then-head coach Will Muschamp from his playcalling duties in Columbia back in 2017 following two less-than-stellar years at the helm of the Gamecocks offense. Viewed by many as a strong football mind in the film room, things didn’t work out for Roper at USC. Because of that, until Monday, he hadn’t earned another opportunity to call plays. That will change soon.

On Monday, NC State head coach Dave Doeren announced that he fired former offensive coordinator Robert Anae. With that move, Doeren also announced that he was promoting Roper to the job. Analyst Gavin Locklear will replace Anae as tight ends coach.
Roper has been with the Wolfpack since 2019, serving at different times as running backs coach and quarterbacks coach. Most recently, he was the quarterbacks coach in Raleigh for the past two seasons.

Roper’s promotion comes as a bit of a shock as the NC State offense didn’t perform well during any of his seasons coaching quarterbacks. In fact, his starting quarterbacks have posted one of the worst TD/INT ratios in the ACC, and the team’s offense hasn’t finished inside the top 63 nationally in scoring in his three years as QB coach (2019, 2023, and 2024).

Between his dismissal at South Carolina and his hire at NC State, Roper spent one season at Colorado. In giving Roper another chance to call plays, Dave Doeren gave his new OC a vote of confidence. During his media availability on Monday, Doeren said in a statement, “Kurt has done a great job for us and knows what we need to do to take the next step forward as a program.”
