South Carolina football is ranked 19th in both the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Gamecocks also are 18th in the College Football Playoff Rankings.

Despite passing the “eye test” in recent weeks, algorithm-based rankings seem to like South Carolina better than the human polls.

This week, the Massey Rankings, in conjunction with On3, released their updated 2024-2025 college football rankings, and the Gamecocks stayed put. Just like last week, South Carolina is No. 15 nationally.

However, USC has moved up one spot among SEC teams, sliding from 8th to 7th after jumping LSU. Two of USC’s three losses (Alabama and Ole Miss) came to teams currently ranked in the top seven Massey spots. The Texas A&M Aggies (a team Carolina smacked two weeks ago) also rank ahead of the Gamecocks. The Georgia Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, and Tennessee Volunteers round out the Southeastern Conference teams ahead of South Carolina.

Carolina’s spot in the rankings stems from a strong Massey resume. According to the rating system, the Gamecocks have the No. 21-ranked offense in the country, the 16th-best defense, and the sixth-toughest strength of schedule.

Massey’s power rating says Shane Beamer’s team is the 14th-best in the country, meaning that the metric believes that the Gamecocks are the 14th-best team nationally moving forward through the rest of the 2024 season. That is better than six teams currently ranked ahead of South Carolina in the latest CFP Rankings.

The Massey Rankings analyze game outcomes, locations, and schedules to rank every team at every level of college football. With this latest update, the Gamecocks are well ahead of their next opponent (the Wofford Terriers) and just behind the rival Clemson Tigers.

Wofford is 196th overall thanks to a 303rd-ranked offense, the No. 145 defense, and a 158th-best strength of schedule. Clemson, however, is rated almost identically to South Carolina. Placed just one spot ahead of the Gamecocks, the 14th-ranked Tigers boast the No. 11 Massey offense, No. 25-ranked defense, and 33rd-highest strength of schedule.

South Carolina’s rise in the Massey Rankings has been impressive. Since the team’s second Bye, the Gamecocks have moved from 31st in the country to 15th. A four-game winning streak that includes three blowout victories and three ranked wins in a row has helped the cause.

A win this weekend likely won’t do much for South Carolina’s Massey Ranking. However, the Gamecocks must take care of business (handily) against Wofford to keep the program’s national perception strong. Williams-Brice Stadium will host this Saturday’s affair at 4:00 p.m. SEC Network+ and the ESPN app will make the game available for streaming.
