South Carolina football nearing top-25 status in Massey Ratings despite 3-3 record
The Massey Ratings ranking system, now partnered with On3, has been a major player in college sports since the 1990s. On Thursday, On3’s Massey Ratings were released for week seven. The South Carolina Gamecocks slotted into the 11th spot in the SEC and 31st spot in college football.
After Saturday’s loss to Alabama, USC moved up three spots in the national ranking but stayed put in the SEC hierarchy. Currently, Carolina ranks 37th offensively and 27th on defense.
According to the official Massey website, “only the score, venue, and date of each game are used to calculate the Massey ratings.” Essentially, Massey only considers game outcomes, margin of victory, schedule strength, and game location. As things stand, the outlet ranks five SEC teams in the top 10 and 14 in the top 50.

A win this weekend could propel the Gamecocks into top-25 territory in the Massey Ratings. Beating Oklahoma (18th nationally, 8th in the SEC) would give South Carolina a boost and would be a huge stepping stone to bowl eligibility.
Even after this weekend’s contest with Oklahoma, the Gamecocks have three more games against teams ranked higher than them in the Massey Ratings. Clemson (12), Texas A&M (13), and Missouri (24) join previous opponents Alabama (4), LSU (10), and Ole Miss (15) and Saturday’s opponent Oklahoma (18) in spots higher than South Carolina.
The entire SEC rankings are listed below (national rankings in parentheses):
- Texas Longhorns (1)
