South Carolina senior earns SEC Football Leadership Council chair

On Thursday, the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council announced that South Carolina football senior running back Oscar Adaway will serve as the SEC Football Leadership Council chair. The news was first reported by GamecockCentral’s Mike Uva two weeks ago but was announced officially on Thursday. Adaway’s peers on the council elected him as the chair. This will be his first time serving on the SEC Football Leadership Council.
Per a previous SECsports.com announcement regarding the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Councils, “The councils serve as a conduit of communication to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness and playing rules.”
Adaway’s recognition doesn’t stop with a council chair position. During GamecockCentral’s sitdown with USC head coach Shane Beamer, Adaway earned more praise as a leader. When asked about potential leaders in 2025, Beamer included his veteran running back. “Oscar Adaway is a guy…I’ve seen him trying to take over that.”

Heading into his seventh year, Adaway has had a long journey through redshirts and injuries in his career. However, he will compete for the top job with the Gamecocks in 2025. Whether Adaway, Jawarn Howell, Rahsul Faison, or someone else gets the first snaps at running back this fall, No. 27 surely will play a role for the South Carolina offense.

Last year, Adaway logged 440 yards of offense and three touchdowns on 92 touches. He had about one-third of those yards in the Gamecocks’ final two games. Perhaps his two biggest plays came on a 36-yard touchdown scamper against Illinois in the Citrus Bowl and on a slick 14-yard shovel pass against Alabama.
Before transferring to the University of South Carolina ahead of the 2024 season, Adaway spent five seasons at North Texas. Between his time with the Mean Green and Gamecocks, he has logged over 2500 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns.
