In the modern world of college sports, money seems to always be a major point of conversation. Those conversations are now slightly more transparent–but only slightly–thanks to new revenue-sharing rules. Attempting to better understand which college football programs have spent biggest, On3’s Pete Nakos surveyed stakeholders across the country, including “head coaches, administrators, general managers, NIL collectives, and agents.” South Carolina was one of 23 total teams mentioned by Nakos as groups spending money this offseason.

However, the Gamecocks weren’t part of the conversation because head coach Shane Beamer and his staff are throwing money around or because they are making unrealistic NIL promises. Instead, according to Nakos’ source, South Carolina belongs in the conversation because the Gamecocks “did the best job in the country retaining talent” this offseason.

Though several players would have been hot commodities had they entered the transfer portal, South Carolina didn’t lose any player in this year’s portal cycle who projected to be a significant 2025 contributor.

Earlier this offseason, reports surfaced that quarterback LaNorris Sellers turned down a sizable under-the-table NIL offer from another program. EDGE Dylan Stewart also told Nakos that teams came calling for him, “but [he] wasn’t listening.” Other players, such as wide receiver Nyck Harbor, offensive lineman Josiah Thompson, and defensive back Jalon Kilgore, would have had a lot of suitors, too. However, they are all Gamecocks again in 2025.

During his appearance at SEC Media Days on Monday, Coach Beamer answered multiple questions about Carolina’s development and retention successes. According to the coach, it is a testament to his team’s culture and the character of the players they sign. A good culture keeps players and coaches happy and fosters success “for years to come,” he said.

In keeping their best eligible players around, South Carolina hopes to build off of a strong finish to 2024. The Gamecocks nearly made the College Football Playoff after rattling off six consecutive wins to close the regular season.

USC will begin its 2025 campaign with a neutral-site contest in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on August 31st. The South Carolina Gamecocks and Virginia Tech Hokies will kick off at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN.
