On Thursday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced a reduced list of 12 nominees for induction in the coach category. One of the coaches on the list is former South Carolina football legend Dan Reeves.

Reeves, Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Jeff Fisher, Alex Gibbs, Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Richie Petibon, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan, and Clark Shaughnessy will vie for one spot in the final voting. The list of 12 will shrink to nine at the end of October. Several more votes will take place to bring the list of semifinalists to one before final voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2025.

Dan Reeves spent nearly 40 years in the NFL. He was an All-Pro running back/wide receiver hybrid with the Dallas Cowboys before injuries cut his playing days short. Before his retirement, he posted the first 500-yards rushing, 500-yards receiving year in Cowboys history and was the first Dallas Cowboy to find the end zone four times in a single game.

His legendary coach Tom Landry added Reeves to his staff of assistants in Dallas, where they won a Super Bowl.

Then, Reeves went on to be one of just ten head coaches in NFL history to win over 200 games. With a regular season record of 190-165 and a postseason mark of 11-9, he is 10th in all-time coaching wins.

Reeves won a Super Bowl as a player, won another as an assistant coach, and was the head coach of four more teams that made it to the Big Game (with the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, Super Bowl XXII, and Super Bowl XXIV and with the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII).

Reeves won NFL Head Coach of the Year honors with both the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. He is one of just six coaches to win the honor with more than one franchise. The Denver Broncos inducted Reeves into their Ring of Fame.

During his South Carolina football career, Dan Reeves was a three-year starter at quarterback. When he graduated, he was the program’s all-time leader in passing yards. Reeves made two All-ACC teams in three years and led the league in passing scores as a sophomore in 1962. He finished his time in garnet and black with just under 3500 total yards of offense and 29 touchdowns.

The University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame inducted Reeves in 1977. The State of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame followed suit in 2006.

Two weeks ago, the HOF also announced Gamecock legend Sterling Sharpe as one of 60 senior nominees for induction.
