Five-star prospect puts South Carolina on final list

On Sunday, five-star interior offensive lineman Darius Gray trimmed his list of potential schools down to a final five. As expected, South Carolina made the cut. Joining the Gamecocks on the Virginia native’s list are the LSU Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Tennessee Volunteers, and Clemson Tigers.
Throughout Gray’s recruitment, there have been several perceived leaders. At various times, South Carolina, LSU, Ohio State, and Tennessee have all been viewed as the top school for the St. Christopher’s School standout. While others have moved up and down the Gray hierarchy, the Gamecocks have remained in a top-two or top-three position at every stage. Now, most in the recruiting industry believe this to be a USC-LSU battle.
Despite being a five-and-a-half-hour drive away from Richmond, Gray has been on campus in Columbia more than ten times. He has great relationships with the South Carolina staff, including offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley and head coach Shane Beamer. With the number of times he’s been in town, he knows a good portion of the team and committed players, too.

Gray is an elite player, too. He has earned every bit of his five-star rating. Listed at 6-2.5 and 285 pounds, he is a really good athlete whose combination of speed and movement ability is rare for an offensive lineman. Illustrating that point, he has been a dominant defensive lineman and basketball player for St. Christopher’s, too. Last year, he earned co-Prep League Player of the Year honor for his efforts on the gridiron and the hardwood.

Having played most of his high school reps at tackle, Gray likely will kick inside at the college level. However, his time outside has helped his footwork and given him valuable experience in pass protection. His physical profile suggests he will also be an elite run blocker.
The On3 industry ranking considers Gray as the No. 22 overall player in the country. He’s also No. 1 among interior offensive linemen and No. 2 in Virginia.
