South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his coaching staff have just about a month before National Signing Day. (Remember when recruits signed in February?) The Early Signing Period begins Wednesday, December 4th, and the majority of teams’ high school recruiting classes will be completed by the time the Early Signing Period ends on Friday, December 6th. In the weeks leading up to NSD, GamecockCentral will profile each player in the 2025 recruiting class. Today, we will look at wide receiver Lex Cyrus.

Lex Cyrus (4-star, Wide Receiver5’10”, 175 pounds)

What the rankings say: 4-star in On3 industry rankings, No. 228 nationally, No. 7 in Pennsylvania, No. 30 among all wide receivers; three of four major recruiting services rate Lex Cyrus as a 4-star prospect

South Carolina beat out Penn State for Lex Cyrus, and one look at his film shows exactly why the Gamecock coaching staff is excited about stealing him out of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Though he is small (listed at 5’10” and 175 pounds), Cyrus is really fast. He’s fast as he attempts to get separation from defenders. He’s fast when he changes directions. And he’s even fast at getting up to his top speed as he possesses elite acceleration.

Cyrus’ speed and quickness are functional on the field too. There might be guys who can beat him in a 40-yard dash in shorts and a t-shirt. However, very few players are faster in pads than Cyrus. He uses his in-game speed to do a good job of shaking free from would-be cover men with crisp routes and sharp cuts. He’s deadly in the quick game, but because of his speed, if defenders play up in tight coverage, he can blow by them down the field. He routinely makes defenders look silly with how he beats their pursuit angles with big-time acceleration.

The Pennsylvania pass-catcher isn’t only good because of his speed, though. Cyrus has good hands, and he is a good enough athlete to make contested catches even against bigger defensive backs.

Some Gamecock fans were concerned about Cyrus’ place in the class, thinking a flip to hometown Penn State might happen. However, this weekend, he told GamecockCentral, “Nah, I’m a Gamecock.”

It will be interesting to see how quickly Cyrus can compete for playing time in garnet and black. Like several other receivers in the class, he needs to add some weight. However, he also could become a game-breaking playmaker for an offense that could use the help. Special teams could be an avenue to early playing time, as well. Cyrus has experience both as a return man and as a gunner.

South Carolina football wide receivers coach Mike Furrey has earned five wideout commitments in the class. Joining Cyrus, 4-stars Jordon GidronMalik Clark, and Brian Rowe and 3-star Jayden Sellers also have pledged themselves to the Gamecocks. There is the possibility of more additions to the class, as well. Because of that, 2025 potentially could be the best haul of pass-catchers in program history.
