South Carolina football alum part of crazy NFL touchdown
South Carolina football fans had a huge Saturday night celebrating the Gamecocks’ dominant victory over top-10 Texas A&M. On Sunday, the NFL slate also began favorably for USC alums.
Just during the early window of games, Carolina Panthers rookie Xavier Legette caught a touchdown, and running back Rico Dowdle caught a touchdown from Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
The Dowdle score was one of the wildest of the weekend.

With the Cowboys trailing the home Atlanta Falcons 14-3 in the 2nd quarter, Prescott dropped back to pass. The three-time Pro Bowler evaded several pass rushers, and with how long the play was taking, the routes broke down. As Prescott stepped up, Dowdle saw some green grass in the Falcons’ end zone. His quarterback saw him and floated a ball over the underneath zone. Dowdle jumped up, lost the ball on a tip, took a hit, landed on his back, and then snagged the ball from above his head just before it hit the turf.

Dowdle, who has been the Cowboys’ primary starter this year, has not found the end zone as a rusher. However, the touchdown reception was his third through the air so far in 2024. Today’s touchdown set new career bests for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
During his South Carolina football career, Rico Dowdle was hampered by injuries, but when he was healthy, he excelled. Dowdle finished his career with 2167 yards rushing, good for 14th in program history. He also was one of just eight running backs to post a 200-yard game on the ground for the Gamecocks.
