Shane Beamer frustrated with lack of NCAA answer on major South Carolina transfer's eligibility case

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is counting on running back Rahsul Faison to be a big part of the Gamecocks’ running game this season. USC signed Faison as a 4-star transfer portal addition during the winter portal window. They did so with optimism that the NCAA would clear him for a final year of college football.
However, up to this point, the NCAA has not made a final ruling on Faison’s status. On Monday, Beamer called the ongoing sage “frustrating.”

Speaking with the media at his Welcome Home Tour stop in Summerville, Beamer was asked directly about whether or not the Gamecocks have received an update regarding Faison. “No, it’s getting frustrating to be completely frank,” he said. “The fact (the NCAA) has had everything they needed from us since January and we don’t have an answer is, frankly, disappointing.”
Beamer continued, “We gave them everything they needed back in January. They asked for more, so we gave them what they needed. They asked for more, we gave them what they needed. We’ve been in contact with other schools he was at to get stuff from them that they needed. Again, I know they have a lot on their plate. But the fact that we’re now in the middle of May and still don’t have an answer–and we just went through a portal window where we didn’t add a running back, but we don’t know if we will have an answer…That’s tough when you start talking about planning for 2025.”

USC’s running back situation isn’t bleak without Faison, but it isn’t as promising as position coach Marquel Blackwell would like. The Gamecocks have Oscar Adaway, Jawarn Howell, Matthew Fuller, and Bradley Dunn on scholarship. Faison, though, has had a good offseason and has seemed positioned to earn a lot of carries this fall.

In 2024, the 6-0, 218-pound back rushed for over 1100 yards at Utah State. This offseason, SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic called Faison the second-best transfer running back in the SEC.
Faison graduated from high school in 2019. However, based on recent precedent, thanks to a gray shirt that year, the 2020 “Covid redshirt,” and some time in junior college, the NCAA should grant him an additional year of eligibility. In total, he saw game action in one junior college season and two seasons at Utah State.
Less than two weeks ago, courts in New Jersey granted a temporary injunction in favor of Rutgers defensive back Jett Elad to play in 2025. Elad also was a class of 2019 graduate with a junior college past. He saw snaps in one junior college season and four Division-I years.
