As Spencer Rattler got closer and closer to Williams-Brice, the crowd of South Carolina fans got thicker and thicker.

The crowd, sometimes five or six people deep, was jarring in a good way to the Gamecocks’ newest quarterback with hundreds of people turning out to watch a spring scrimmage.

“It was like non-stop,” he said. “I mean, you look left and right and there are fans everywhere. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

It also had to be attention-grabbing for the wealth of high school recruits the Gamecocks hosted Saturday night.

South Carolina also used their spring game—at night for the first time ever—to really amp up the recruiting aspect.

The Gamecocks were also able to bring in a wealth of talent to watch the game. That also includes 32 players who they’ve offered already over the next couple of classes.

“We had a bunch of prospects here but 32 of them we’ve offered a scholarship to and we want them to come play football here at South Carolina,” Shane Beamer said. “The statement we made here about what this football program is about and what this university is about was an awesome, awesome, awesome statement.”

Beamer also said he “can’t put it into words” how impactful the attendance—listed at over 20,600 people—and atmosphere can be for recruits to see.

South Carolina’s hosted prospects all spring, but things culminated in what was a massive recruiting day for the Gamecocks.

“It was the best players in South Carolina to the best players in surrounding areas. It’s a who’s-who of people we’re recruiting right now. That’s awesome. To be able to put a statement like that out on the field and for those guys to see what this place is about,” Beamer said.

“There’s a lot of excitement and energy about South Carolina football. We tell recruits all the time that it’s a great time to be coming into the program.”

The Gamecocks don’t have any public commitments yet in the 2023 class. But they are recruiting some of the top players in the country in the 2023 and 2024 classes.

South Carolina hosted a lot of its priority prospects Saturday, and the players are also taking a role in recruiting as well.

“We always have guys in the facility every day: recruits, high school coaches, parents. It’s like an open-arms facility. We’ll let anybody that supports the program or a recruit or high school coach (come),” Rattler said.

“It’s part of the game. You have to do your part to help recruit players to come here. I feel like with this year’s recruiting class we’ve done a good job of that.”
