Shane Beamer discusses South Carolina's feelings on spring transfer portal window

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media on Wednesday. Following a “little soap box” stance about spring depth charts, Beamer shared about his team and how things are going. One of the points of conversation was the spring transfer portal window.

When asked if he and his staff had a spring portal plan, Beamer called the window a potential opportunity.
“As always, if there’s an opportunity to increase the competition and make our team better, it’s my responsibility as the head coach to do that,” said the Gamecock headman. “And there’s certainly some positions where you guys can look at us and know the depth and the numbers are a little bit lower than maybe what you would like. And if there’s an opportunity to increase the depth and numbers in a room, we certainly want to do that without a doubt.”
Earlier in the conversation, Beamer lamented the fact that he’s not satisfied with the current state of his defensive line. Mentioning both the defensive tackle spot and the EDGE position, Beamer said the Gamecocks “don’t feel great” about the depth on his defensive front. “We need to get our defensive tackle position solidified…we need to get that EDGE position solidified,” he stated.
An injury to Missouri transfer Jaylen Brown and a recent transfer decision by Wendell Gregory have dented USC’s EDGE depth. The defensive tackle position room remains a question mark after losing five scholarship players from last year’s team.
With a thinner group at both positions, it would seem that South Carolina will look around for defensive line depth when the window opens in the middle of next week.

However, Beamer made it clear that the Gamecocks will be selective in their transfer portal shopping.
In speaking on a hypothetical addition to his program, Beamer said, “They’ve got to fit what we’re about on and off the field and truly make us better for us to want to pursue someone in the portal.”
One of the focal points of Shane Beamer’s coaching philosophy has been establishing a strong culture. Players–both current and former–have lauded the coaching staff’s efforts to build a culture built on love and brotherhood. Anyone joining the program has to fit in with those efforts, too.
The spring transfer portal window officially opens on Wednesday, April 16th and will close on Friday, April 25th. Potential underclassmen transfers must enter their names into the portal during the 10-day window. Graduates can enter at any time. However, players in the portal can join their new teams at any point, as long as they are eligible academically.
