Reported originally back in January by legendary Florida sports reporter Buddy Martin and then confirmed on Wednesday by multiple outlets, former South Carolina football offensive coordinator Steve Spurrier, Jr. is returning to the Florida Gators. He will work as an offensive assistant, likely in an off-field analyst role. He previously worked at Florida from 1994-1998 as a graduate assistant.

Spurrier, Jr. the son of former South Carolina and Florida coach Steve Spurrier, worked for his father at both stops. He also followed Spurrier, Sr. to the NFL to work for the Washington Redskins. He most recently served as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Tulsa. The younger Spurrier coached both running backs and quarterbacks during his time with the Golden Hurricane.

With the Gamecocks, Spurrier, Jr. spent 11 years working with the USC offense. He was the team’s wide receivers coach for all of those seasons, served as passing game coordinator for seven, was co-offensive coordinator for four, and held the title of recruiting coordinator for five.

He also was part of the staff that led South Carolina football to its best stretch in program history. In 2010, the Gamecocks won the SEC East for the only time. Then, from 2011 to 2013, USC won 11 games three seasons in a row and finished in the AP top 10 all three years. Carolina cracked the AP poll in nine of Spurrier, Jr.’s 11 seasons with the team.

During his Gamecocks career, Spurrier, Jr. helped coach some of the best wide receivers ever to wear garnet and black. Those names include Sidney Rice, Kenny McKinley, Alshon Jeffery, Tori Gurley, Ace Sanders, Bruce Ellington, Damiere Byrd, Pharoh Cooper, and Deebo Samuel.
