Former 4-star South Carolina Gamecock finds new home via transfer portal
On Thursday, former South Carolina football running back Djay Braswell committed to the Georgia State Panthers. Braswell appeared to confirm the news via social media.
Braswell will join a Georgia State program that became synonymous with running the football under previous head coach Shawn Elliott. Now that Elliott has made the move to Columbia, the ground attack has slowed in Atlanta. Braswell, a former 4-star prospect, will look to revive it.
During his time with the Gamecocks, Braswell played sparingly. He did not redshirt as a true freshman as injuries forced the young back onto the field. He did not see any game action during the 2024 season.
Ironically, his biggest moment on the field didn’t come with the ball in his hands. Against Kentucky in 2023, Braswell picked up a blitz in pass protection that gave quarterback Spencer Rattler just enough time to find Xavier Legette in the end zone for what proved to be the game-winning score.

Braswell is the only running back who left the Gamecocks this offseason via the transfer portal. Fellow running back Rocket Sanders is graduating and off to the NFL, Juju McDowell is out of eligibility, and Oscar Adaway is hopeful for another year of eligibility following a medical redshirt appeal. Young backs Jawarn Howell and Matthew Fuller appeared to pass Braswell on the 2024 depth chart.
USC did not sign a running back in the 2025 high school recruiting class. However, linebacker pledge Jaquel Holman was a good high school running back and is rated as such by other outlets. Carolina could bring in a back from the transfer portal, as well.
