South Carolina defensive back Vicari Swain hasn’t been with the team much this offseason while dealing with “an academic issue.” Updates have been few, but head coach Shane Beamer has remained optimistic that Swain would make a timely return.

His optimism was well placed.

During a Welcome Home Tour stop in Greenville on Thursday, Beamer updated the redshirt sophomore’s status. When asked if Swain would be back this summer, Beamer said succinctly, “He will be.” The fifth-year head coach provided some further details, saying that he will return “once we get back for summer school, when that cranks up. The Tuesday after Memorial Day is when we start.” Swain’s return for the Summer I session will give him a full summer of workouts and a complete fall camp with the team.

A former 4-star athlete in the class of 2023, Swain redshirted his first year on campus before playing in all 13 games of the 2024 campaign. The talented coverman logged 13 tackles last fall, including a strip sack against Kentucky. He also knocked away one pass and had several good moments in coverage as the first corner off the bench in most situations.

With O’Donnell Fortune off to the NFL, the Gamecocks are looking for a starter at corner opposite Judge Collier. Swain will be one of the top contenders for the spot, though missing spring practice might have provided other players with opportunities for upward mobility on the depth chart, too.

Other players like Brandon Cisse, Myles Norwood, and Jalewis Solomon also will compete for the open cornerback job.
