South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer provides update on potential defensive starter not practicing this spring

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer had the chance to speak to the media on Tuesday. The Gamecock headman had a lot to say about his team’s first couple of weeks of spring practice. He also provided an update on defensive back Vicari Swain.
As reported previously on GamecockCentral, Swain is not going through spring ball with South Carolina. The potential starter at cornerback is working through an academic issue, but indications have been that he would rejoin the team before the start of the 2025 season.
The update on Tuesday was even more optimistic.

According to Beamer, Swain is “in great standing” with the program. Because of that, the fifth-year head coach estimates that the redshirt sophomore DB is “expect[ed] back sooner than later.” Beamer added that Swain’s situation is “nothing that will deter him from being able to play this season.”
Beamer’s update matches what GamecockCentral has heard and reported. Still, the positive news regarding Swain could be a big deal for the 2025 version of the South Carolina football team.

With starting corner O’Donnell Fortune a likely selection in April’s NFL Draft, Swain is one of the favorites to step into the starting 11 on defense. Returning starter Judge Collier, NC State transfer Brandon Cisse, Ball State transfer Myles Norwood, redshirt junior Emory Floyd, and redshirt freshman Jalewis Solomon are the other players expected to battle for snaps on the outside of the USC defense.
During his redshirt freshman campaign, Swain played in all 13 games for South Carolina. He logged 13 total tackles, including a strip sack against Kentucky. He also played some important coverage snaps in the rivalry victory over the Clemson Tigers.
