What Shane Beamer said about Spencer Rattler's looming NFL decision
South Carolina’s regular season is over, and now a lot of attention turns to looming NFL decisions along with an offensive coordinator search and a bowl game on the horizon.
The biggest NFL decision out there currently is that of quarterback Spencer Rattler, and Shane Beamer said the two met this week to discuss what’s next for him.

“I met with Spencer yesterday morning and had about 15 individual meetings with players since yesterday morning. They’ve been fantastic,” Beamer said on 107.5 FM Tuesday. “In regards to Spencer, I’ll keep that between us. But he obviously has a decision to make. He’s really enjoying his time at Carolina and proud of what he’s accomplished not only what he’s done the last two weeks but the entire season, as he should be.”
The two didn’t engage in those discussions during the season because, as Beamer said, they were “focused on winning football games.”
Since the Gamecocks finished their regular season, those talks can commence and figure out what’s best for Rattler and his future.

Players have until mid-January, after the national championship, to decide whether or not they will declare for the NFL draft. South Carolina’s not sure when its bowl game will be, but the Gamecocks know it’ll be at either the end of December or the beginning of January.
“There is time to make that decision. They don’t have to declare for the draft here for another month or so. He wants to make a sound, thorough decision. He’s got plenty of time to do that,” Beamer said. “Like I told him, we’ll support him with whatever he decides to do. We want to arm him and his family and people with as much information as we can and make the best decision for his future.”

This season, Rattler is completing just under 67 percent of his passes for 2,766 yards (7.9 yards per attempt). He’s thrown 16 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.
He’s playing his best football to close the year, though. Over the last two weeks–wins over Tennessee and Clemson–he’s 55-for-76 for 798 yards (10.5 yards/attempt) with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.
If he does opt to return for another year, Beamer said, it will certainly be attractive for whoever the Gamecocks hire as their next offensive coordinator.

“In regards to the hire, I’m going to do what’s best for the South Carolina football program long-term without a doubt. But a coordinator that has an opportunity to work with a quarterback like Spencer Rattler would be appealing to a lot of guys,” Beamer said.
“If Spencer decides he wants to play at Carolina for another year I want to make sure he has a good relationship with however we end up hiring. That is important to me, for sure, but it’s not a deal breaker. I have to do what’s best for South Carolina football in 2023 and beyond.”
