Pair of future Gamecocks battle in instant classic South Carolina state championship game
South Carolina football fans were excited about Friday night’s high school 4A state championship game between Westside (Anderson) and South Florence because the top two offensive players in the game (Westside’s Cutter Woods and South Florence’s Jayden Sellers) will be Gamecocks soon. The soon-to-be teammates battled in what would become an instant classic.
While the South Florence Bruins ended the night hoisting the trophy, both future South Carolina Gamecocks had huge showings.
For the victors, Sellers logged three touchdown catches and over 100 yards receiving. He also had a key onside kick recovery that took away an extra Westside possession and helped secure the 42-41 win.
On the losing side, Woods still was incredible. The quarterback threw for six touchdowns and around 400 yards.
The final minutes of the contest were chaotic in the best way.
In an affair that was back-and-forth all night, South Florence took a 42-35 lead with a little over two minutes remaining in the game. Then, Woods immediately answered with a 50-yard touchdown throw. However, a failed 2-point conversion try left the Rams behind 42-41 with 1:52 left on the clock.

Sellers snagged the ensuing onside kick attempt, but the Bruins weren’t able to bleed the clock completely. A beautiful punt downed Westside at their own 1-yard line. Though Woods got his team out of their own end zone, there was not enough time for a comeback, and South Florence won the game. The victory was the Bruins’ second South Carolina state championship in the past three seasons.
Two years ago, a senior quarterback by the name of LaNorris Sellers (ever heard of him?) led the Bruins to a title. On Friday, his younger brother did the same as Jayden Sellers couldn’t be covered.
Members of the class of 2025 recruiting class, both Sellers and Woods will be enrolling early with the Gamecocks.
