Freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers impressing with arm and legs in spring practice
There’s going to come a time when South Carolina will have to move on from Spencer Rattler. After this season, the Gamecocks will have to find their next quarterback.
Who could that guy be? Well, several players could fill that void. One name in particular that has stood out in his short time with the team has been LaNorris Sellers.
A four-star South Florence quarterback that flipped from a long-time commitment to Syracuse, Sellers is going through his first spring practice with the Gamecocks.
“Every day, he comes in and puts his head down and works,” Luke Doty said. “Whether that be coming in early to get extra reps in the film room or coming back up after practice during the evenings with me and going through it.”

Doty, a veteran who’s been working with the younger quarterbacks, said Sellers reminds him of himself.
“Just his willingness to do the extra things that people don’t really see. That’s what stood out to me,” he said. “The drive that he has to learn, to get better and to do things out there on the field that are going to set him apart, that stood out to me.”

It also hasn’t taken Sellers very long to make a good impression on his pass catchers.
“LaNorris is my guy, man. When he first got here, he thought he was good at Madden. Played him a couple of times and showed him that he needs to practice a little bit,” Ahmarean Brown said, laughing. “But that’s my man. He’s gotten a couple of good reps. He’s going to be special. I think when he has time to grow a little bit and sit behind Spencer and watch what Spencer does.”

Sellers was the only quarterback signed by the Gamecocks in the class of 2023. He took a big leap forward in progression during his senior year of high school, making a name for himself in recruiting. He completed 150-of-258 passes for 2,948 yards with 45 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Something that could be beneficial to him in the future is his ability to make plays with his legs. He ran for 1,338 yards and 17 touchdowns last year with the Bruins.
“If we leave a gap open or a seam, and he got an opportunity to run, he’s going to take it, man,” Tyreek Johnson said. “He’s just so fast.”

At least for this season, Sellers won’t see much playing time on the field, rather learning from Rattler and Doty amongst others. But when his opportunity does come, he could be the next star for the Gamecocks.
“I think he’s going to grow into a great quarterback. He has a strong arm, he has great legs,” Brown said. “I think his best days are ahead of him.”
