When South Carolina begins its bowl practice Monday morning, it will do so with the same offensive line setup as there’s been almost all season.

But, there is still some uncertainty about what the coaching situation looks like once the season ends and the calendar turns over to 2023.

Greg Adkins–the team’s offensive line coach entering the year–has been serving in a support staff role for the majority of the season while Lonnie Teasley has been the Gamecocks’ on-field coach.

That will be the status quo through the week, but could change once things turn to January.

“Right now it’s status quo as we go through bowl prep,” Shane Beamer said. “They’re both out there working hard and working hard in the building. As we get through the season and figure out exact roles for 2023 we will.”

Adkins stepped away from his on-field role before the South Carolina State game with the university citing “minor health issues,” in a release.

Teasley has since taken over as the team’s offensive line coach and has been there for the majority of the season. Teasley’s spent time at Delaware State, Temple, Tennessee Tech, Arkansas Pine Bluff and North Carolina Central before coming to South Carolina during the coaching change.

Both coaches, though, spent time on the road recruiting the last few weeks. Adkins was filling in for Marcus Satterfield after he left for Nebraska.

South Carolina will stick with Teasley as the offensive line coach for the bowl. The Gamecocks will also use Adkins in the support role he’s assumed for most of the season.

“Right now he’s back. It’s the same role he had throughout the season. He stepped away for a little bit from a health standpoint,” Beamer said. “(He) came back and was involved in the program throughout the rest of the season. Lonnie Teasley stepped up and did a great job with the offensive line as the year went on.”

South Carolina hired Adkins in January 2021, inking him to a two-year deal worth $550,000 annually. The deal will expire on Jan. 1, 2023, two days after the Gamecocks play in the Gator Bowl.

Right now the board has not approved an extension for Adkins. Beamer has said he wants both coaches back on staff next season.

“I want coach Adkins back here on our staff,” Beamer said. “I want Lonnie Teasley back here on our staff. We have good coaches. I want all of them back after the bowl game.”

South Carolina begins on-site preparations for the Gator Bowl Monday morning with the first practice scheduled for 10 a.m. The Gamecocks face Notre Dame Friday, Dec. 30 with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
