South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was hopeful the Gamecocks would be able to get tight end Brady Hunt back for its bowl game after he was injured late in the win over Missouri.

But following South Carolina’s first practice in Orlando for next Tuesday’s Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, Beamer said he wasn’t counting on Hunt to be available for the matchup with Illinois

“Not great,” Beamer said when asked how he felt about Hunt being available for the game. “He didn’t do anything today. I’d say he’s doubtful for the game. I feel like he’s progressing. He just hasn’t progressed as fast as he and I would both like. We’ll see what happens between now and the 31st, but I’d say it’s unlikely right now.”

Hunt, who missed the last two games of the regular season, was part of Carolina’s three-man rotation at tight end along with Joshua Simon and Michael Smith.

Assuming he’s unable to play, Hunt will finish with two catches for 22 yards in his first season in Columbia after transferring in from Ball State.

The news was more positive for veteran center Vershon Lee who was missing from practice on Friday.

“Vershon’s fine. He’s a little under the weather today,” Beamer said. “I just felt like it was best to just keep him the heck away from everybody else. So he’s been in his own room at the hotel. He has rode over here separately. And I asked him if he had ever heard of the Michael Jordan flu game versus the Jazz. He’s a basketball guy. He said he had. But he’ll be fine. He just woke up today and was not good. So we just felt it was best just to keep him away from everybody. But he’ll be fine for game day.”

The only other new injury to speak of is tight end Maurice Brown II who was in a non-contact jersey on Friday.

“Moe Brown’s fine,” Beamer said. “Yeah, just taking care of him today. He’s got a little bit of an injury, but he’ll be fine. He was in no-contact. We just did that out of precaution. He did everything today.”

The No. 15 Gamecocks and No. 20 Illini are set for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Camping World Stadium with ABC carrying the action.
