Gamecocks optimistic MarShawn Lloyd will play against Florida

The South Carolina football team exits the Vanderbilt weekend in much the same situation on the injury front in which it entered it: waiting to see when running back and team MVP MarShawn Lloyd will be able to return.

The Gamecocks’ star running back suffered a “pretty significant bruise” to his thigh that limited him in the loss to Missouri and then he did not travel to Vanderbilt this weekend.

“Injury-wise, came out of the game pretty good, no issues from last night,” head coach Shane Beamer said Sunday night on his teleconference. “And then we’re optimistic on MarShawn Lloyd. We’ll see how he progresses. We just got off the practice field; he didn’t really do anything tonight. We’ll see how he progresses tomorrow and then what he’s able to do in practice on Tuesday but optimistic he’d be able to go this weekend.”

Lloyd had been optimistic that he could play this past weekend against the Commodores when he spoke to the media on Tuesday, but his status took a turn for the worst as the weekend progressed.

The Gamecocks were able to take a by-committee approach to running the ball in the 38-27 win over Vandy with do-it-all tight end Jaheim Bell taking on a large portion of the load at running back.

The Gamecocks had some players leave the game in Nashville but guys like Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith were able to return to action on Saturday night and Beamer doesn’t believe there were any serious injuries in the game.

“We did have some guys that got banged up but nothing that we feel like is long-term,” Beamer said. “Again, it’s November in the SEC, your body’s not going to feel good. Do we have some guys that are banged up and not 100 percent? Sure, but don’t have anybody coming off the field last night that we don’t feel good about. And that includes B.J. Gibson. He’s getting an MRI tomorrow on his hamstring. Would not say that he’s doubtful or definitely going at this point. We’ll see how the MRI looks but we’re optimistic that he’ll be able to do something for us this weekend also.”

South Carolina did announce on Saturday night that safety David Spaulding, who did not play in the game, is likely out of the remainder of the season.

It’s a tough blow for both Spaulding, who missed significant time after getting hurt in the opener, and for a secondary that has seen injuries mount up.

The former transfer from Georgia Southern returned to action for the Kentucky game and had become an instrumental contributor at safety, starting two of the three games since he returned to action before he missed this week’s game with the injury.

Spaulding, who didn’t make the trip to Nashville, is sidelined with the same foot injury Christian Beal-Smith had in the preseason that caused him to be in and out of the lineup frequently.

The Gamecocks, after earning their sixth win over the season on Saturday, travel to Florida this upcoming Saturday with a 4:00 kickoff vs. the Gators.
